A September Must-Have: Apple Letter Mat Freebie
Whether you're just getting into the groove of your small groups or building stamina during centers, this free apple activity for kindergarten is an easy win. It's a low-prep, hands-on activity that invites your students to practice identifying letters and sounds while staying totally on theme!
This activity includes:
-
An apple-themed mat featuring letters A-Z
-
Both uppercase and lowercase options
-
A simple, adaptable format for all kinds of use
And the best part? It takes just a few minutes to prep. Print it, laminate it (or slide it into a plastic page protector), and you’re ready to roll!
How to Use the Apple Letter Mats in Your Classroom
The beauty of this free apple activity is in its flexibility. Whether you're running literacy centers, doing small group interventions, or filling your morning tubs, this mat is your go-to tool for apple activities for kindergarten.
Here are a few favorite ways to use it:
1. Magnetic Letter Match
Grab a set of magnetic letters like the ones in this alphabet letter set and have students match the letter to its apple on the mat. They can say the letter name or the sound as they place it. You could even set up a “partner play” version where one student says the letter, and the other finds it!
2. Mini Eraser Cover-Up
Mini erasers, like these apple-themed ones, are always a hit. Say a letter or a sound and have students cover the corresponding apple. Plus… instant fine motor bonus!
3. Pom-Poms and Tweezers
Need a little fine motor boost? Use jumbo tweezers and mini pom-poms to cover each letter. You’ll be amazed at how focused students get when tweezers are involved!
4. Letter Tile Matching
Don’t have magnetic letters? These uppercase and lowercase letter tiles work just as well! Match uppercase to uppercase or mix it up and match uppercase to lowercase for a little extra challenge.
5. Teacher-Led Center
Turn these alphabet mats into a small group game! Call out a letter name or sound, and students cover the matching letter using any of the tools above—tiles, mini erasers, even dry erase markers if your sheet is laminated.
6. Dice & Cover Game
Pair this mat with a custom die (you can tape letters A–F or A–Z to the sides of a foam cube). Students roll the die and cover the letter they roll. Simple, fun, and engaging!
7. Beginning Sound Scavenger Hunt
Call out a beginning sound (like /b/ for “banana”), and students find and cover the matching letter. You can even stretch this idea into vocabulary building by having students name a word that starts with each letter!
8. Morning Tubs or Early Finisher Option
Keep a few laminated copies handy in a bin with a container of letters or manipulatives, and you’ve got yourself a ready-to-go morning tub or a quiet early finisher task. Independent, engaging, and easy to rotate in and out!
