Description

This beginning sounds activity is sure to be a student favorite in your classroom as students practice identifying beginning sounds!  Building the relationship between letter names and letter sounds is a critical step in setting the foundation for learning to read and write. It is important for students to be able to quickly identify letter names and know the sounds that they make. This resource will help to provide your students with practice to help them build a solid letter sounds and beginning sounds foundation plus build some fine motor skills at the same time!

Good news! This beginning sounds activity is part of a BUNDLE! Check it out here: Beginning Sounds BUNDLE.

The activities are fun, fresh, and engaging. Plus they are SUPER easy to prep! Just print and slide in a page protector! These activities would make a great morning work tub, fast finisher activity, or literacy center.

Do you have stockpiles of mini erasers? This beginning sounds activity will put those to good use as your students practice forming the letters of the alphabet with them! If you don't have mini erasers, don't worry, plastic math cubes or other small classroom manipulatives will work too.

Picture names are included for ALL pictures.

This packet contains three different types of activities:

Build the Sound 1: This will provide students will guided practice to form the letters. Each mat shows the uppercase and lowercase letter along with a beginning sound picture. Students will place the manipulatives along the arrows on the letters to form the uppercase and lowercase letters.

Build the Sound 2: Students will select a card and identify the beginning sound. Students will form the letter, that makes the sound, independently on the activity mat. Uppercase and lowercase letter formation reference pages are included.

What's the Sound?: Students will determine the secret sound from a series of three pictures. Students will form the uppercase or lowercase letter that matches. Uppercase and lowercase letter formation reference pages are included.

It is a good idea to begin this activity in a small group teacher-led setting so that students can become familiar with the correct picture names.
