Description

Kids love playing games, so they will love the activities included in this beginning sounds resource. They'll have so much fun playing these beginning sounds games with partners and small groups that they won't realize they are learning. This is a must-have for a teacher's bag of tricks! The activities will make teaching {and learning} letter sounds exciting, engaging, and hands-on!

Good news! This resource is part of a BUNDLE! Check it out here: Beginning Sounds BUNDLE.

This packet includes 6 different beginning sounds games. Each game has multiple versions. These activities would be perfect for morning work, literacy centers, small group guided reading, or fast finisher tubs.

All activities are easy to prep. Just print, laminate, and cut apart. Students will need mini erasers or plastic linking cubes to use as game pieces.

Sound Games 1: Players will roll a dot cube and count the dots. Using the code at the top of the game mat, they will identify the corresponding letter sound. They will cover a picture with the corresponding beginning sound. If all of the corresponding pictures have been covered, the player skips their turn. The first player to cover all of the pictures on their mat is the winner.

Sound Games 2: {Great for small groups!} Players will take turns selecting a game card and identifying the beginning sound. If the player identifies the sound correctly, they can cover a picture on their game board. If they are incorrect, the card goes back in the container. If a player draws a β€œspecial card”, they must follow the directions on the card. The first player to cover all of the pictures on their game board is the winner.

Sound Games 3: {Great for small groups!} Players will take turns selecting a game card and identifying the beginning sound. If the player correctly identifies the sound, they can move forward one picture on their game board. If they are incorrect, the card goes back in the container and the player doesn’t move on the game board. If a player draws a β€œspecial card”, they must follow the directions on the card. The first player to reach the end of their game board is the winner.

Sound Games 4: This is a Roll, Say, Keep game. Students will place six picture cards face down on their game mat. They will roll the dot cube and turn over the corresponding card. If they identify the beginning sound correctly they keep the card and replace it with another card from the deck. If they are incorrect they turn the card back over and the next player goes. At the end of the game the winner is the player who has the most cards correct.

Sound Games 5: Students will take turns spinning the spinner. They will identify the letter sound and cover a picture with the same beginning sound. If all of the corresponding pictures have been covered the player skips their turn. The game is over when all of the pictures have been covered. The player that covers the most pictures is the winner.

Sound Games 6: Students will take turns rolling the dot cube. They will determine the number they rolled. Using the code on the right of the mat, they will identify the corresponding letter sound and cover a picture with that beginning sound. If all of the corresponding pictures have been covered the player skips their turn. The first player to cover four in a row is the winner.
