Description

Throughout PreK and Kindergarten, we work hard to help our students master letter recognition and letter sounds. Building this relationship is a critical step in setting the foundation for learning to read and write. It is important for students to be able to quickly identify letter names and know the sounds that they make. This packet of beginning sounds centers will provide your students with exciting and engaging practice.

This resource includes 6 different beginning sound centers with corresponding recording sheets and “I Can” pages. Also included are answer keys for easy checking.

To prepare the activities in this packet, print and laminate the activity cards and “I Can” cards. Print the recording sheet.

Beginning Sounds Center 1: Students will identify the beginning sound of the picture on the card. They will find the matching letter on the paper and trace it to match the background color of the card. (2 different activities included)

Beginning Sounds Center 2(Numbers to 10): Students will count the number of pictures on the card and identify the beginning sound of the pictures. They will find the matching letter on their paper and record the number to show how many pictures are on the card. (2 different activities included: A-M and N-Z)

Beginning Sounds Center 3: Students will use dry erase markers or magnetic letters to identify the beginning sounds of a series of pictures. They will find the same picture series on the recording sheet and write the letters to show their answers.

Beginning Sounds Center 4: Students will identify the shape on the card and the beginning sound of the picture. They will find the matching shape on their paper and record the uppercase and lowercase pair to show the beginning sound. (2 different activities included)

Beginning Sounds Center 5: Students will identify the letter / letter sound on the card. They will determine which two pictures have the same matching beginning sound. On the recording sheet students will color the two pictures with the corresponding beginning sound.

Beginning Sounds Center 6: Students will identify the beginning sound of each picture. They will determine which two pictures have the same beginning sound. On the recording sheet students will color the two pictures with the same beginning sound and record the letter.
