Spring Activities for Kindergarten

Earlier this month I posted the latest edition of 6 Pack Centers. This time, the theme is Spring - specifically spring activities for Kindergarten! I think spring activities might be one of my favorites to make. It's a reminder that the snow will soon be melting and warmer days are on the way.

Are you on the lookout for spring activities for Kindergarten? Look no further! This post has math and literacy ideas that will work perfectly in your centers! Click through to see the 6 pack of centers in action. You'll receive teen numbers, counting, sight words, CVC words, beginning sounds, making words, change the sound, and MORE! The practice pages are great for morning work, small group work, sub tubs, remediation, or homework. Click through for all the details for your students!

These 6 Pack center packets include 6 centers {3 literacy and 3 math} and 6 follow up no-prep practice pages. The practice pages are great for morning work, small group work, sub tubs, remediation, or homework. The recording sheets come with answer keys, teacher friendly directions, and "I Can" visual direction pages for the kiddos. Here's a sneak peek of what's included in the 6 Pack Centers: Spring Edition!

Students complete the number bond by determining how many more are needed to make the whole number. I included frog counters which can be printed on card stock and then laminated for durability.

Here we are working on teen numbers. There's ten bugs in the jar and some bugs got out! Students need to determine how many bugs there are in all by counting groups of 10 and the extra bugs.

I really love when you can practice two or more skills with one activity. Here students count the number represented by the ten frame and record the number in the box with the little flower. They count back to fill in the numbers that come before.

In several of my monthly centers packs I have an activity called "Secret Code Sight Words". I have received so many requests to make more of those activities and to make them for CVC words too. {I'm working on Secret Code packets, but thought I would also include some individual activities in these smaller center packs.}

Secret Code Words are so fun and are without a doubt are always a class favorite! Students identify the beginning sound of each picture to spell a CVC word. Next, they read the word and match the picture to the card. To show their answer, they record the secret CVC word on the recording sheet. {Note: There is a beginning sound reference page included.}

We are blending onset and rime in this Make a Word activity. Students will blend the onset on the top of the rainbow with each ending on the clouds. They will determine which makes a real word. On their paper, they will record the real word and draw a picture to match. {Note: I have the kiddos put a snap cube on the ending that makes a real word. This way they don't forget which one they chose as they are recording their answer.}

And finally, we have the activity called Change the Sound. Students read the CVC word written in the clouds on top, then they change the beginning sound to spell the new CVC word shown in the sun. To show their work, they record the new word on their paper.

Here's one of the no-prep follow up pages for the Change the Sound activity. It's identical to the actual center activity which means less re-explaining!

It's perfect as one of your spring activities for Kindergarten!

This is the follow up activity for the Make a Word center. Students color the cloud to show which ending makes a real word. They write the word on the line and glue the picture on to match.

Comparing Numbers Spring Freebie

Have you noticed that I love shopping and seasonal activities for the classroom? Luckily that means great freebies for you, like this comparing numbers spring freebie. I hope you and your students love it as much as mine do!

I found these adorable jelly bean erasers at Target a few weeks ago. They were in the Dollar Spot section, so I had to get several packs (of course!). Each pack contains 20 erasers in 5 different colors. I love the little faces on them. Aren't they the cutest?!

My first thought was to put various colors in the plastic eggs that I bought at Hobby Lobby (hello 50% off!) and have students graph the colors. But the more I started thinking about it, I thought a comparing numbers activity would be a fun twist! This activity is similar to the Reindeer Games freebie that I shared back in December.

Let your preschool, Kindergarten, and 1st grade students work on comparing numbers with this spring freebie! They're going to love it for math center, stations, games, partner work, and more! It's the perfect math activity to use during the spring months of March, April, and May! You can use it for Easter or any of the spring seasons by changing the manipulatives included. So stop over and grab your FREE copy today! Your preK, Kinder, and 1st graders are going to love it!

To prepare this comparing numbers spring freebie activity I put various amounts of jelly bean erasers in each egg. {If you don't have these erasers, no worries, you can use real jelly beans, or any type of small erasers or small manipulatives.} Be sure to use several of the same color eggs so students don't know how many objects are in the egg. You'll need to print the game mat and add some bingo dabbers or crayons. Students can play with a partner or a small group.

To play the comparing numbers spring freebie game, each student selects an egg from the basket. They open the egg and count the number of objects inside. The student with the least amount of jelly beans wins that round. They dab {or color} a circle on their game board to show they won that round.  {Note: with this activity you can decide if you want students to practice identifying the number that is the least or the greatest.}

Then they put the objects back in the egg and return the eggs to the basket. They take a different egg and repeat the process of counting and comparing. The player with the least amount in the next round dabs their game mat, and so on.

You can see my favorite bingo dabber by using my affiliate link to purchase them on Amazon here

St. Patrick's Day Activities for Little Learners

Earlier this month I shared with you some fun DIY word family hats that are perfect for St. Patrick's day.  Today I'm back and sharing some read aloud ideas and fun classroom activities - St. Patrick's Day activities for little learners

You are going to love these St. Patrick's Day activities for little learners! Your preschool, Kindergarten, and 1st grade students will love them too! Click through to grab your FREE downloads, and make sure to check out the math and literacy activities. Plus there's a great list of St. Patrick's Day books you can read the entire month of March. Graphing, counting, CVC words, nonsense words, and MORE can all be found here! Saint Patricks Day ideas galore!! (And remember the freebies!)

You can use my affiliate link to purchase any of the books through Amazon.

Read Alouds are one of my favorite times of the day. I usually do a real aloud after lunch and/or recess. Usually our read alouds correlate to a holiday, theme, or author we are studying...and sometimes, they are just for fun! As a classroom teacher it is so important that you make time to sit and read to your students. Kids love to be read to. There might be a child in your class that doesn't ever get read to, so always make time to read...and read for fun! Pictured above are some of my favorite read alouds for St. Patrick's day.

The other day I was at Party City and took a quick stroll down the St. Patrick's day aisle. I couldn't believe how much St. Patrick's day stuff they had! A lot of it was perfect for the classroom! Normally I stock up on seasonal items in the Dollar Spot at Target. But I wasn't having much luck finding St. Patrick's day stuff. Thankfully Party City came to my rescue! The items were a little more than $1, but I thought the prices were still pretty good! Now my St. Patrick's Day activities for little learners can be a total hit this March!

With the exemption of the small shiny coin in the bottom left corner which came from Hobby Lobby (40% off!!) the rest came from Party City. The stamps were $4, the black cauldrons were $4 (but they are SO hard to find..and I can pull them out again at Halloween!) and the rest of the items were between $2-$4.

I found these St. Patrick's day erasers there too. They were $4, but you get 144 of them! There's so many uses for them, but I thought they would be great to use for graphing!

If you want to shop from the convenience of home, you can buy them directly from Party City

 We usually graph cereal, but I thought it would be fun to mix it up and graph erasers. I'm big on theme erasers so my kids always look forward to using them. It's like Christmas when new erasers appear!

To prepare this activity, I put some erasers in a little cauldron (so sorry, that didn't make it into the picture) and then we sort the erasers on a paper plate. I find it's a good idea to give kids work space boundaries when there's lots of little pieces involved. A paper plate works great for this! Students sort the pieces, graph their findings, and then use their graph to answer questions on the right.

You can download a copy of this page by clicking on the picture below. Don't have erasers to match? No worries, I included some cut apart pictures in the download that you can use instead! :)

This is a fun little partner game is similar to the winter version that I blogged about here. Students play with a partner or small group. They take turns spinning the spinner and placing that many manipulatives on their game board. The first person to reach 30 wins, Towards the end of the game, students need to spin the exact number on their game mat to finish the game. So if they have 28 and they spin a 2, they lose a turn. Same with the number 29, they need to spin a 1 in order to win the game!

 I used gold coins to make a real and nonsense word sort. I took a Sharpie marker and wrote real and nonsense CVC words on the coins and put them in a cauldron. (Just a tip...go slow when you're writing on the coins, the raised image on the coin was a little challenging to write over). The students read the word to determine if it is a real word or a nonsense word and then record it on their paper. This is such a cool center just because of the shiny coins and cauldron.  You can cut yellow circles from construction paper, if you don't have coins. Or use my affiliate link to grab some gold coins from Amazon.

Who's still practicing those CVC words? We practice and practice and practice some more. I made some shamrocks using the die-cut machine. (You could use foam shamrocks or these cutout shamrocks from Amazon too). To make this activity, program shamrocks with the CVC words to match the pictures on the paper. Students hunt the room looking for the shamrocks and then record the CVC word next to the matching picture.

Here's some other festive activities. These are from the St. Patrick's Day edition of my 6 Pack center series. I am loving this series because they have 3 literacy centers, 3 math centers, and 6 no-prep practice pages to reinforce the centers included in the pack. Each activity also includes teacher friendly directions and "I Can" visual direction pages for students.

Some short vowel practice here. Students sort the pictures by the middle vowel sound and then record the CVC words on the lines.

Also included in the 6 pack centers are six no-prep follow up practice pages. This way you have some resources to provide your kiddos with some extra practice. You could also use these for morning work, homework, or a sub tub. Here's two samples of what those look like.

Thanks for reading along as I share the fun of my St. Patrick's Day activities for little learners!

Word Family Hats Freebie (for CVC words)

During this time of year we really focus on CVC words. That's why today I want to share with you our word family hats!

We work hard to move past /c/ /a/ /t/ --> cup to /c/ /a/ /t/ ---> cat. It's so fun to watch the pride on their little faces when they finally get it. We do a lot of word family practice so that kids learn "if I can spell..., then I can spell..."

For instance, if they can read and write hat, then they can read and write: cat, mat, rat, sat, etc. just by changing the first letter. Showing students the connection between the words seems to make the process less intimidating and in the end, makes them more successful.

I made this little hat activity to practice word families and CVC words. It's super easy to put together. I printed the hat template on card stock

(I used green card stock for our word family hats so that I can use it for St. Patrick's day, but you can use any color you'd like). Using them for Halloween? Use orange! Valentine's day? Use red! Easter? Use pastels! You get the idea!

Just laminate and cut out the hats. I typed the word families on the hats so that they correspond to the word families on the recording sheet. Sometimes I am so picky about my own handwriting, so it's just easier to let the computer do the work for me!

Next, I printed the CVC words on white card stock. (Here's an affiliate link to the cardstock I use - 65# cardstock) I used white because I wanted the words to be easy to read and stand out, but again, you can use any color.

Kindergarten students are going to LOVE these FREE word family hats! When they need to work on CVC words, just grab a quick hat & get started! Students will quickly & easily understand that words go together. This makes the learning process easier for them! This freebie is also great for your preschool or 1st grade students! Print them on green for St. Patrick's Day, orange for Halloween, red for Christmas or Valentine's Day, pastels for Easter, or choose another color for another time of year.

 Students will read the word family and then match the CVC strips to the corresponding word family hats.

Just a little tip...when printing be sure to set your printer setting to "scale to fit" so the border on the recording sheet doesn't get cut off!

Here's another activity idea for working on CVC Word Families. I don't know about your class, but spinners are ALWAYS a hit in mine. When I use spinners, I swear the kids have so much fun that they forget that they're learning too! It doesn't matter the skill, there's just something about spinning that paper clip around and the anticipation of what they'll land on.

I made a CVC packet entirely focused around the concept of spinners. This packet is so easy to prep {which is the part that I love} but is SO fun for the kids! Just print, cut, and laminate the spinner. Print the recording sheet and you're done. There's also an "I Can" chart included.

Students use a paper clip and pencil to make the spinner. After they spin, the say the name of the picture that they spun. They find the matching CVC word on their paper and color it.

My favorite part of this activity is that it's color coded so that I can check their work once they are finished. There's a small dot on the spinner that tells the student what color to color that word.
